In the documentary Roman Kemp: Our Silent Emergency, Kemp revealed that he came close to attempting suicide after battling with depression for 13 years. [26] Kemp is a supporter of Arsenal F.C. Harp, Justin (17 December 2019). "I'm a Celebrity's Roman Kemp will host BBC's New Year coverage". Digital Spy . Retrieved 17 December 2019. Do you know what it is? My dad was a really good artist. He used to paint beautiful pictures.” Mostly in oil crayons; Kemp has some on his walls. “But he worked in a factory. And I think in another life my dad would have been an artist. And he knew that he wanted to give me and Gary that chance.”In 2020, Kemp co-hosted a Sunday morning programme with his father, titled Martin & Roman's Sunday Best! on ITV from 14 June 2020. [20] On 19 November 2020, Kemp featured as a guest panellist on the ITV Daytime show Loose Women and was part of the first all male panel in the show's 21-year history. [21] In March 2021, Kemp presented a documentary on BBC Three, Roman Kemp: Our Silent Emergency, exploring the mental health and suicide crisis affecting young men. His friend, producer Joe Lyons, killed himself in August 2020. [22] Therefore, by sharing experiences and highlighting what support is available, we can help others feel less alone, challenge stigma and encourage honest and open conversations. If you, or someone you love, is experiencing suicidal thoughts, it’s important to seek help and remember that with the right treatment and support, the majority of people who have felt suicidal will go on to live fulfilling lives.” The Capital DJ will discuss the impact on his life after losing his best friend, Joe Lyons, the radio producer who launched his career, to suicide. Whilst I’ve seen Roman in programmes such as DNA Journey and the documentary he did on mental health and suicide, I don’t listen to Capital Radio and so that side of his story was interesting to me. And I know of his parents and enjoyed their music but they were necessarily a family I followed (figuratively of course), but it was a real eye opener learning about them as people rather than just their names.

Roman Kemp is set to open up about how he once contemplated suicide and his battle with depression since childhood in a new book. Now that he is mostly playing himself – in books, and in all those reality TV shows and presenting roles – he feels much better about being recognised. With the band he used to feel he was “never putting enough of me into it”. “Now it’s different,” he says. “Someone sees me and waves, that’s great. Am I coming into my own? I think I’m a lot more relaxed about life.” The turning point came when he and Gary were cast as Reggie and Ronnie in the 1990 film The Krays. Maybe it was the fact they played twins; maybe it was the way Anna Scher, who had taught them drama as children, got them crawling around the floor in a refresher session, pretending to be preschoolers, but something about the experience “equalised” them.

If a doctor came in now and told me 'Roman, you've been taking a placebo for 15 years'... great. I'll carry on." Speaking to Maitlis, he said: "It's such a difficult area for me to talk from because I am the definition of silver spoon, the definition of privileged. I had every hug that a son could get from their mum and dad.Kemp thinks he gets his approach from his own father, a printer, who was encouraging and nonjudgmental. In the early Spandau days, when Kemp was heading for the front door in a crimplene dress and makeup, he would call out: “Goodnight!” hoping to provoke his dad’s disapproval. But his dad would only glance up from his chair and say: “Have you got your keys?” Putting themselves down in a serious or jokey way, for example ‘Oh, no one loves me’ or ’I’m a waste of space’ I got every present, everything I ever wanted. And yet there I was in a position where I felt like it's pointless me being here. I really appreciate his honest in every area but particularly about his upbringing. He’s aware that he’s had a privileged life that not everyone has and I really like how he’s been honest about the positives and negatives of that fact, without sounding spoilt or patronising. It’s a nice balance. This is book is part discussion of mental health issues and part autobiography (recognising that Roman was 29 when he wrote this).

Roman shares all the experiences that have shaped him, and why love, marriage and having his own family one day are so important to his future dreams.” At Christie’s for the launch of a George Michael art sale in 2019 … from left: Kemp, Harley, Shirlie and Roman. Photograph: Mike Marsland/WireImage Mind’s Get It Off Your Chest report, commissioned in partnership with the English Football League, showed men’s help-seeking behaviour and their ability to speak openly about their mental health has improved to a degree over the last decade. However, the report also revealed that 45 per cent of men say they feel worried or low more regularly than ten years ago, and are consequently twice as likely to feel suicidal. Foster, Alistair (18 August 2017). "Roman Kemp says celebrity radio guests don't faze him after his childhood". www.standard.co.uk . Retrieved 4 April 2021.

In the book, Kemp stops short of an apology. “Oh, listen,” he says immediately. “I would apologise to Tony, absolutely, for the way that he was treated. I think it was really poor.” For a unique double act, why not book Roman alongside his father Martin Kemp; perfect for corporate awards events. In 2019, Roman won over yet more fans coming third in I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, with his uncanny impressions of everyone from Ant and Dec to his mate Harry Styles. This book was a combination of self help and autobiography. Overall I liked Roman's gentle, humble, friendly and honest approach. He doesn't sugar coat and he is pretty explicit about his struggles. I only wish he was a little bolder about his opinions - at some points it feels like he is apologising for himself or preempting people saying negative things, which I don't think he needs to do. At times it felt like he was searching for things to say, for example coming up with a fantasy football league and going into the credentials of various players. But his story was reasonably interesting and of course, as an educational tool the book achieved its purpose in warning and teaching about suicide and the importance of mental health. There were quite a few errors in the writing, I'm not sure if this is an editing or a writing issue?
